Description
This tool and the brake pin kit is used to check for misalignments of the rear brake pins on Lambretta engines you can see an instructional video here Sticky’s Eccentric Lambretta Brake Pin Kit.
How to fit the alignment tool?
The laser cut alignment tool is self-assembly, simply fit the screw and washers.
Sit the tool on the inverted rear hub cone and use the two large washers, a rear hub washer and a nut to secure the tool onto the layshaft.
How to use
The thread of the screw is positioned at the same distance from the axle as the brake lining in the hub. Simply rotate to check for free movement and then wind on the brake adjuster to simulate the position of the shoes as you brake.
With Sticky’s Eccentric Lambretta Brake Pin Kit you can then adjust the position of the shoe to optimise contact between the brake shoe and drum, as per this video.
What is it?
This is a kit to resolve the common problem of very weak Lambretta back drum brake.
The root cause of this problem is machining inconsistency in the position of the fixed brake pins on nearly all classic Lambretta engine casings, and especially Indian ones.
When the brake pins are incorrectly positioned you get the following symptoms
- You can’t fit the rear hub over new brake shoes without ‘trimming’ them.
- The rear brake is ineffective because only one shoe contacts before the other
- The rear brake works poorly because only one end of the brake shoes contacts the drum,
Sticky’s Eccentric Brake Pin Kit can be used as a treatment for these problems, by allowing you to manually adjust the position of the shoes. This is done using offset brake pins that can be angled to optimise contact between brake shoe and drum.
How do you optimise shoe position?
Optimisation of pin position is done using the CP Brake Alignment Tool.
How do you keep the pins in the correct position?
This is done using a simple but clever solution: shims. Adding shims under the pin changes the position of the arrow on the pin – effectively the ‘high’ point of the cam. After you have discovered the correct shims to align your pins, then you secure the pins in place with a tab washer (spare tab washer included in the kit).
All the instructions for this method are included with the kit, or you can watch this video on YouTube to see the process in action.
